New 3 million acres reserve in Ecuador's Amazon protects indigenous land and biodiversity

Ecuador has a new protected area of over 3 million acres in the Ecuadorian Amazon! 🎉 The creation of the Tarímiat Pujutaí Nuṉka Reserve is historic both because of the size of the area and also due to the inclusivity of its process.
The creation of the Tarímiat Pujutaí Nuṉka Reserve in Ecuador is a significant step towards protecting Indigenous land and preserving the country's rich and diverse ecosystems. The reserve covers over 1 million hectares of Andean and Amazonian forests in the Morona Santiago province and is home to a wide range of unique and diverse ecosystems, including cloud forests, sandstone plateaus, Amazonian lowlands, and floodplain forests. This area is also home to over a thousand species of birds, many of which are endemic to the region, and large mammals such as jaguars, tapirs, and spectacled bears.

The creation of the reserve was the result of a unique collaboration between the government of Morona Santiago, Indigenous communities, and NGOs and facilitated by Nature & Culture International. The "pre-legislative consultation process" involved 21 meetings with the Shuar, Achuar, and other Indigenous communities, which allowed for a better understanding of their different visions for the reserve. This inclusive process ensured that the reserve would serve the needs of both the environment and the Indigenous communities who live there.
The Tarímiat Pujutaí Nuṉka Reserve is intended to act as a corridor for wildlife species, connecting to other protected areas in eastern Ecuador and northern Peru. It is also aimed at reducing the threat of deforestation, which has been a significant concern for the local Indigenous communities who have been fighting against encroaching mining, logging, and cattle ranching activities. The reserve is expected to help reduce deforestation rates and protect the region's natural resources for future generations.
