Swedish Transport Administration says No to road signs for charging stations

The Swedish Transport Administration's sign expert Iréne Lodell says that they now want as few signs as possible by the road, and that the size of the town should make you feel what service there is. In addition, there are mobile apps that can guide you to the charging stations. But despite the restrictive policy, the agency has still allowed a few individual signs. - We only do it where there is a need, but where you as a road user can expect that there is a certain service where it should not need to be signposted, says Iréne Lodell at the Swedish Transport Administration. Thousands of gas station signs - In how many places in the country have you given permission to sign for charging stations? - There are probably about 20 places, but it is difficult to say exactly because there are no statistics on it, says Lodell. - How many signs for petrol stations can there be then? - There are thousands! It is an old symbol so it is found in very many places! --- Very outdated policy. No wonder people that don't own an electric car think it is impossible to find a charger. @Trafikverket OK. Thank you so much for taking the time to look into this. You should write to SVT and tell the journalist that they are wrong.

The owner of a charging station or a service station can apply to Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Administration) to request signage (route guidance) to the station. Each application is assessed taking into account the aspects of the site, and applicants have the right to appeal against the decision. The Swedish Traffic Signs Regulations (vägmärkesförordningen 2007:90) are the legal basis of this procedure.

The administration might be concerned about the visual impact of adding more road signs https://connectionsunlimited.io, as an excessive number of signs could clutter the roadside and reduce visibility for drivers.

Ok!? But according to the article in SVT you deny most of the application for EV chargers. Is that incorrect? Or do you mean that very fem charging stations are applying and that is the reason why we don't have any road signs?

@Rentzhog Trafikverket does not initiate putting up road guidance to charging stations, the owners of the facility need to apply for it themselves. It is correct that there are very few applications for road guidance. We have made an internal search and found that only twenty-something applications were made from 2010 until today across the whole country.

Why should we put up a lot of signs that we don’t need? How many of those who drive EV’s doesn’t have a smartphone? And how many of the EV’s doesn’t have a navigator installed? I’ve been driving EV for a year know (52 000 km so far) and not for once I’ve felt the need for the signs you want. Only in Sweden we would have thousands of those signs, have you calculated the environmental gains and losses for those unnecessary signs?

Gamla skyltar som inte skulle blivit godkända idag bör plockas ner isåfall.

The signs are for those who don’t own EV. They think there is to few chargers today so that they don’t wants to buy an EV as next car. I have met many of them. And it would not hurt to see a sign to discover new chargers too. In Sweden there is so many apps. By your logic we could remove all signs for petrol as well.

@knys I think that a lot of the ICE-cars doesn’t have a navigator. And I think that there might be lot of ICE-car owners doesn’t have a smartphone. Signs for petrol stations might still be a good idea.

What, lol, that's just silly, they could even cover old signs with stickers

What a back flip in the Swedish government that boasts itself for spearheading the country as one of the most sustainable?Imposing such restrictions impairs awareness creation.I suppose these signs are so important. This taints the govt's reputation and the excuse is not justifiable.
