Scientists at the British Antarctic Survey have predicted that Thwaites Glacier and the Antarctic Ice Sheet could collapse within the next 200 years.
This is not good news for the people living around the coastal regions.
A picture of some glaciers in Antarctica
Rob Larter, a marine geophysicist with the British Antarctic Survey and a member of the research team, said, "Thwaites' retreat has significantly sped up over the last 30 years, and is expected to accelerate this century.
The Doomsday glacier holds enough water to raise sea levels by over 2 feet, but because it acts as a barrier holding back the Antarctic Ice Sheet, its collapse could eventually trigger a sea level rise of around 10 feet, threatening coastal cities from Miami and London to Bangladesh and the Pacific Islands.
Researchers have been trying to find more clarity over the nature of glaciers over the past six years. They recorded one breakthrough via Icefin, a torpedo-shaped robot sent to the glacier's grounding the point where the ice rises from the seabed and begins to float, a key area of vulnerability.
This might not sound like much but a 2019 report stated that 44 per cent of the world's population lives within 150km of the coast, almost one in 10 people live in coasts less than 10m above sea level and more than 70 per cent of the planet's surface is already below sea level.

The accelerating collapse of the Thwaites Glacier poses a serious threat to coastal regions worldwide. Its potential to raise sea levels by up to 10 feet could have devastating impacts on millions living near coastlines. Immediate action on climate change and global collaboration is crucial to prevent the worst outcomes.
