Day 709: Sustainable Gastronomy Day/National Go Fishing Day. Overfishing is a huge problem that face our seas, but an increasing global population isn't the entirety of the issue. Demand for fish has been rising, but it's not just because of a growing global population - we are just eating more fish.
.
Fact: The average person eats about 40 pounds of fish a year. Those in coastal areas may eat more than those inland, but that average is twice what it was 50 years ago! Combine that with a growing population, food waste rates, and overall shrinking fish numbers - we got quite an issue on our hands. Unless drastic changes are made to the seafood industry, we could see the end of widespread seafood before we know it.
