Virgin Atlantic to operate first sustainable fuel powered transatlantic flight

The first transatlantic flight powered only by sustainable fuels is due to take off on Tuesday morning. Operated by Virgin Atlantic, it will fly from London's Heathrow to New York's JFK airport at 11:30 GMT. Airlines see the flight, which is supported by government funding, as demonstrating that a greener way of flying is possible. But a lack of supply remains a challenge, while other technology will be needed to hit emissions targets. So-called sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) can be made from a variety of sources, including crops, household waste and cooking oils. SAF is already used in small amounts, blended with traditional jet fuel, but accounts for less than 0.1% of the aviation fuel consumed around the world. It currently costs more than kerosene, and relatively small amounts are made. Aircraft are usually only allowed to use up to 50% in a blend. There are no dedicated commercial SAF plants in the UK, although the government aim is to have five under construction by 2025, supported by grant funding. Airlines see the first long-haul flight using 100% SAF as a significant milestone. But experts say such fuels are not a magic bullet. Dr Guy Gratton, associate professor of aviation and the environment at Cranfield University, said: "We can't produce a majority of our fuel requirements this way because we just don't have the feedstocks. And even if you do, these fuels are not true 'net zeros'." He said the growing use of SAF had to be treated as "a stepping stone towards future, genuinely net zero technologies". https://www.bbc.com/news/business-67548961?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Bbbc.news.twitter%5D-%5Bheadline%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D&at_campaign=Social_Flow&at_campaign_type=owned&at_link_origin=BBCWorld&at_ptr_name=twitter&at_link_type=web_link&at_link_id=16A7CB54-8D86-11EE-87C8-2AAAE03B214A&at_medium=social&at_format=link&at_bbc_team=editorial

Virgin Atlantic's upcoming transatlantic flight powered solely by sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) marks a significant milestone for the aviation industry. This move, supported by government funding, is seen as a demonstration of the potential for greener flying. SAF, derived from sources like crops, household waste, and cooking oils, offers a more sustainable alternative to traditional jet fuel. While SAF is currently used in small amounts globally, its production is limited, and it costs more than traditional kerosene. The flight highlights the challenges of scaling up SAF production and emphasizes the need for further technological advancements to achieve ambitious emissions targets. Despite its limitations, the industry views this as a crucial step toward more sustainable air travel. Experts caution that SAF should be seen as a stepping stone toward future, genuinely net-zero technologies. #SustainableAviation #ClimateAction #VirginAtlantic #AviationTechnology
