Iberdrola has significantly boosted its renewable energy production in Portugal with the completion of two new photovoltaic plants in the Algarve region. The Montechoro I and II plants, with a combined installed capacity of 37 megawatts (MW), will produce enough energy to power 19,000 homes and prevent the emission of over 21,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. These projects were awarded to Iberdrola in a 2019 auction and are part of the company's broader strategy to support Portugal's transition to renewable energy.
The €30 million investment in the Montechoro plants has created around 200 jobs in the region, stimulating the local economy by involving local suppliers in the construction of the grid connection and substation. Alejandra Reyna, CEO of Iberdrola Renovables Portugal, emphasized that these new plants mark a significant step toward decarbonizing the economy and enhancing Portugal's renewable energy capacity. This initiative aligns with both national and global objectives to reduce emissions and promote energy autonomy.
Beyond energy production, Iberdrola is committed to protecting biodiversity and implementing conservation measures at the Montechoro sites. The company has preserved the Gruta Pequena do Escarpão, a geological site of interest near Montechoro II, and plans to support educational visits focused on local geology, clean energy generation, and environmental benefits. Additionally, Iberdrola has created habitats for various species, planted trees native to the area, and transplanted endangered plant species to promote local biodiversity.
Iberdrola's commitment to renewable energy extends beyond the Montechoro plants. The company has a diverse portfolio of projects in Portugal, including hydroelectric, wind, and additional photovoltaic plants, contributing to a total installed capacity of 1,435 MW. These projects not only enhance Portugal's energy security and competitiveness but also create sustainable employment opportunities and reinforce Iberdrola's role as a leader in the global energy transition.

@rosebellendiritu To achieve this, sensitization is crucial for raising awareness about the benefits of renewables, dispelling myths, and encouraging adoption across communities and industries. Effective communication and education can drive widespread support and accelerate the transition to a sustainable future.

@rashid_kamau While there are challenges such as initial costs or intermittency, these are manageable and outweighed by the benefits of reduced emissions, sustainable energy security, and long-term economic gains. The environmental and health benefits of renewables are well-documented, with no significant cons that undermine their value.
