A New Dawn for Nairobi Rivers?

On 22nd February 2023, the president of the republic of Kenya Dr William Samoei Ruto led the launch of the Nairobi Rivers Commission with an ambitious plan to clean up the river basin. The commission is part of the President’s plan to improve the city’s blue-green infrastructure and ensure that the people of Nairobi can enjoy the natural beauty of the river. Its mandate is to provide strategic direction, oversight and coordination of efforts towards the rehabilitation of Nairobi’s rivers. Scientifically, I mean naturally, water is colorless and odorless. But the water you find in Nairobi river will beg to differ. The river has become heavily polluted over the years due to various human activities such as dumping of untreated sewage and solid waste, industrial pollution, plastic pollution and agricultural runoff. The pollution has had significant impacts on the environment, the health of the people who live along the river, and the wildlife that depends on it. https://www.greenpeace.org/africa/en/blogs/53320/a-new-dawn-for-nairobi-rivers/#:~:text=The%20pollution%20of%20Nairobi%20River,importance%20of%20protecting%20the%20environment.

It is commendable to see the president taking the initiative to launch the Nairobi Rivers Commission and prioritize the cleaning up of the river basin. This is an important step towards addressing the environmental issues and improving the overall health of the rivers in Kenya. It is crucial to have a dedicated commission that can focus on implementing effective strategies and policies to protect and restore the rivers. I hope this initiative will lead to significant improvements in the quality of water and the overall ecosystem of the Nairobi rivers.

@rosebellendiritu And what if the Nairobi river has always been cleaned up and we dispose trash in the river all over again?? Residents living in the area might be the ones pulling us back.Or factories?🤔
