YOUTHS ENGAGEMENT IN HYPREP PROJECT FOR SUSTAINABILITY & INCLUSION IN NIGER DELTA REGION

Dear UNEP Team, We, at Lincgreen Climate Change Initiative, a coalition of young climate justice advocates in the Niger Delta region, write to suggest a way to promote inclusivity within the HYPREP project. Our core work focuses on the communities worst affected by the oil spillage crisis and climate-related challenges such as floods and droughts. We initiated the "Look Beyond Oil" campaign in Rivers State, intending to expand to all Niger Delta states, where we brought together young people in partnership with We Don't Have Time (
https://wedonthavetime.org

) and the Rivers State Ministry of Environment. This campaign received extensive media coverage and ignited an awakening among young people interested in pursuing clean, sustainable livelihoods beyond oil. We believe that the HYPREP project is pivotal for the hope, restoration, and research and development needed in the region. However, after visiting the facility with our team, we have noticed a significant gap—many young people in the Niger Delta do not understand the aim and scope of the HYPREP project and feel left out of the process. While we have been vocal on social media and used creative videos to raise awareness about HYPREP's work, we wish to go beyond that and actively involve the youth. To bridge this gap, we propose partnering with UNEP to host a three-day boot camp, where young climate justice advocates can learn, brainstorm, and make meaningful contributions to the HYPREP project. We aim to explore the sustainability framework together with all stakeholders. We are collaborating with the youth wing of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) to connect the younger and older generations—the wise and the energetic—to secure a sustainable future for the Niger Delta. We propose holding a boot camp involving 50-70 active young, indigenous climate justice advocates and environmentalists in Ogoni, Khana LGA. This will serve as a capacity-building opportunity where participants can learn from past experiences and project towards the future while also visiting significant sites to gain a deeper understanding of the progress made so far. We kindly ask UNEP to consider this idea. You are welcome to review our YouTube channel, social media pages, and other platforms to observe our progress thus far. It would be an honor for us to work with UNEP to make this initiative successful. Thank you for considering our proposal. The youth is extra important in marginalized communities that might not feel a lot of hope, there is a lot that can be done there and mobilizing the youth will allow us to do so. Great idea!
