Mercedes-Benz Pioneers Sustainable Battery Recycling with New Factory
Mercedes-Benz is making significant strides in sustainability with the construction of a battery recycling factory in Kuppenheim, Germany. This innovative facility aims to reduce resource consumption and establish a closed-loop recycling system for battery raw materials. The groundbreaking ceremony for this pioneering project took place in March 2023, and the first stage, focused on mechanical separation, is set to commence operations in spring 2024.
The factory will include a hydrometallurgy pilot plant by mid-2024, pending successful discussions with the public sector. This approach to integrated recycling within a single factory is unique in Europe. Mercedes-Benz is investing a substantial amount, supported by funding from the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection as part of a scientific research project. This investment not only reinforces the importance of the Kuppenheim site within Mercedes-Benz’s global production network but also marks a significant step forward in the company’s sustainable business strategy.
The Kuppenheim facility is designed to achieve a recycling rate of over 96%, effectively creating a "mine of tomorrow." According to Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, this innovative technology allows the valuable raw materials from old batteries to be reused in new electric vehicles. This project enhances Mercedes-Benz’s expertise in the battery value chain and underscores their commitment to sustainability. The company is collaborating with industry and scientific partners to showcase the potential of Baden-Württemberg and Germany in advancing sustainable electromobility.
The recycling process at the Kuppenheim plant will encompass everything from shredding battery modules to processing battery-grade materials. Mercedes-Benz is partnering with Primobius and several scientific institutions to ensure the entire battery recycling process is optimized. The pilot plant is expected to have an annual capacity of 2,500 tonnes, producing enough recovered materials to manufacture over 50,000 battery modules for new Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The findings from the pilot project could lead to an increase in production capacity in the future.
Mercedes-Benz’s holistic approach to battery recycling involves circular design, value retention, and closing the loop. The company ensures that all components and materials in their vehicles are suitable for recycling from the design stage. They offer reconditioned batteries as replacement parts and utilize second-life storage systems for batteries no longer fit for vehicles. This comprehensive strategy, which includes strict attention to human rights and working conditions, supports the sustainable use of raw materials like lithium, nickel, and cobalt throughout the entire supply chain, ultimately conserving resources and promoting a circular economy.
