Post 805: October 23rd, 2021. Aviation is a big emitter of greenhouse gases, pushing many in the industry to find greener alternatives to jet fuel. They're big shoes to fill, but one newfound potential alternative: mustard.
.
The sauce itself is no better at being a jet fuel than a condiment (personal opinion? maybe), but research from the University of Georgia has found that fuel made from the Brassica carinata mustard plant could reduce aviation emissions by 68%! By crushing and processing the oil found in its seeds, the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) burns much cleaner, all without the reliance on fossil fuels. The mustard plant is also able to be grown in the off-season, keeping farmers from a 'food or fuel' conundrum.
.
The emission reduction is necessary for the aviation industry to make it in a more sustainable decade, but it still isn't the silver bullet for clean aviation. Mustard plants still require land, water, and equipment to be grown, harvested, and processed - which take resources away from other uses and contribute their own carbon emissions. There is also a logistical issue in the Southeastern United States (where research was conducted on the fuel type): there are simply not enough processing facilities in operation. If the fuel source was going to become a mainstay, the industry would have to pour millions, if not billions, into constructing facilities that could extract the mustard's oil. So while the search for truly green aviation continues, the concept shows that no idea is too crazy to consider in our fight against climate change.

Graphic shows a bottle of ketchup and mustard. The factoid reads: "Mustard-powered planes could cut carbon emissions by almost 70 percent."
