At last year’s COP meeting, the world agreed on ambitious targets for energy efficiency, but the action is lagging. During COP29 in Baku, Alfa Laval will push for bold and brave NDC’s and faster and more substantial support for energy efficiency implementation. As a global leader in technology for sustainable solutions, Alfa Laval is taking an active role in the event, bringing an action-oriented vision for accelerating the transition to a net zero world.
During COP28 in Dubai, governments called for doubling the global average annual rate of energy efficiency improvements from 2% to 4% by 2030. While this commitment has spurred policy action on energy efficiency, the results have been lacking. The International Energy Agency’s report Energy Efficiency 2024 – Analysis - IEA, states that the average energy efficiency improvement in 2023 and 2024 was weak, around 1%, which is a step backward from the 2% baseline rate. The policy improvements had been offset by increased energy demand from transport, cooling, and industry. To meet our targets, immediate action must be taken to improve energy efficiency in these sectors.

Urgent action and implementation
Alfa Laval will participate at COP29 in Baku to advance discussions on climate solutions and inspire action as the world closes in on critical climate targets. According to the Paris Agreement, we need to halve the world’s greenhouse gas emissions 2030. To achieve this, energy efficiency improvements are necessary.
“We are only 66 months away from November 2030 and we need to focus on actions with immediate and substantial impact, like reusing excess heat and improving the energy efficiency of industrial processes. The solutions exist and are ready to be implemented at scale,” said Madeleine Gilborne, Head of Clean Technologies, Alfa Laval.
“We also need partnerships across value chains and between private and public sectors to unlock the financing and accelerate the implementation of energy efficient solutions. By making the solutions available and affordable, industries and nations have no reason to delay their implementation,” continues Madeleine Gilborne.
Turning up the heat – how data centers and industry can accelerate net-zero cities
On November 14th, Alfa Laval will host a key event together with We Don’t Have Time’s COP29 Climate Hub, to champion efficient, resilient urban energy systems and emphasize the importance of sector coupling for decarbonizing the cities. In this session, we will discuss the pivotal role of cities in implementing energy efficiency solutions. Private and public partnerships and collaborations across the value chain will be essential for unlocking the funding. System approaches, like utilizing waste heat from data centers and industries can enhance energy security, affordability, and competitiveness while creating jobs.

Energy Efficiency – How do we unlock the money for the doubling down target?
A major objective of COP29 is to unlock funding and to produce a new goal for future climate finance. As a global thought leader on energy efficiency, and through partnerships such as the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Energy Efficiency Movement (EEM), Alfa Laval is uniquely equipped to advocate for impactful solutions.
Alfa Laval will drive forward the discussions on how to unlock the funding of the transition at COP29 by hosting and participating in several events. One example is hosting the high-level broadcast and closed round table: “Energy Efficiency – How do we unlock the money for the doubling down target?”, with panelists from IEA, governments, Industry, Word Bank, European Investment Bank, and other financial institutions. Indeed the time for action is now... World and energy sectors should focus more than 4% set in cop28 toward cop30. Backward of 1% now it's quite discouraging. Anyway am looking forward to hear your advocacy for impactful solutions that can drive way forward and a needed game changer.
