Australia ‘on track’ with climate targets needed to protect Great Barrier Reef, Labor tells Unesco

Already, marine heatwaves have triggered three mass coral bleaching events on the Great Barrier Reef in just five years, reducing shallow water coral reefs by as much as 50%. Coral reefs can recover from bleaching over time, but only if temperatures drop and conditions return to normal.

@george_kariuki What's needed is ongoing, active management through scientific interventions, alongside rapid, enormous cuts to global greenhouse gas emissions.

@johnte_ndeto so that sunlight can reach their zooxanthellae for photosynthesis. For this reason they are generally found only in waters with small amounts of suspended material, or water of low turbidity and low productivity.
