Poverty is one of the Sustainable Development Goals as still about 9% of the world lives in extreme poverty with less than $2.15 a day. Independent of which monetary or non-monetary poverty is referred to, understanding and predicting poverty is important to make efforts to reduce poverty effective. Typically, monetary poverty is predicted using different economic variables, such as how much money is earned and spent. Non-monetary poverty is predicted based on survey and census data. But as both types of poverty involve many dimensions, it is important to look for further relevant variables. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be put to good use here. In this article, I explain how AI can be used to recognize poverty:
