MONUMENTAL LOW BUILD WTC ROTTERDAM FROM ENERGY LABEL G TO A++

Rotterdam, 21 December 2021 – It already applied to the Highrise of WTC Rotterdam, but now the monumental low-rise building including the Postillion Hotel WTC Rotterdam has also obtained the 'BREEAM In-Use Very Good' certificate. The entire building has also recently been provided with an A++ energy label. This is an important milestone in the revitalization process of WTC Rotterdam. The BREEAM certification is particularly special because the low-rise building has a monumental status. This makes implementing the sustainable adjustments with respect for this monumental status an extra challenge. One of the ambitions of investor Bouwinvest is to have its entire real estate portfolio meet the goals formulated in the Paris climate agreement before 2045. Jan-Willem Kos, Senior Asset Manager Office & Hotel Fund explains: ''We have been working on concrete initiatives for some time to make our real estate portfolio 'Paris Proof'. In this way we have been able to significantly reduce CO2 emissions.” During the revitalization of WTC Rotterdam, a complete series of sustainable adjustments was made, including the installation of solar panels, the replacement of all lighting with LED lamps, a highly advanced climate system and a challenging facade renovation. Kos explains: “For example, this facade renovation has led to a 30-ton reduction in CO2 per facade, per year. Our elevators and escalators generate their own energy.” Water-saving measures have also been taken in all sanitary facilities and a Green Lease is offered as standard with every new tenant and lease renewal. From now on, every adjustment at WTC Rotterdam will be viewed from a sustainable perspective. ''That now results in this important certification. Obtaining this certificate shows that good results can be achieved even in a monumental building'', continues Kos. In addition, we also have an eye for other sustainable initiatives, such as placing nest boxes for birds and bats on the roofs, making a shared car park available and extensive waste separation. In the field of climate adaptation, Bouwinvest continuously tries to review its real estate portfolio to see whether we can make improvements based on the changing climate. ''For example, for the WTC Rotterdam, we examined the old way of draining rainwater. As a result, we are now installing green roofs to slow down drainage and limit heat stress,” says Kos.
