Colombian Court Asked to Recognize Climate Rights for Ecosystems and Wildlife

A new lawsuit in Colombia seeks legal rights for jaguars, macaws and the nation’s tropical dry forest, highlighting the impact of climate change on these ecosystems.
The Amar Madre Tierra Foundation filed the lawsuit, pointing out the damage caused by mining to Colombia’s most threatened ecosystem, the tropical dry forest and its wildlife. Due to destructive activities exacerbated by climate change, this forest now covers only about 8% of its original area.
The complaint urges the court to revoke mining licenses and enforce restoration projects, emphasizing the link between human well-being and healthy ecosystems. Protecting these areas is crucial not only for biodiversity but also for combating climate change impacts.
This legal action is part of the "rights of nature" movement, which aims to grant ecosystems legal protections to better address environmental and climate crises.
