Puerto Rican municipalities are suing ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron for denying the impact of their products

Puerto Rican municipalities have filed a lawsuit in federal court against ExxonMobil, Shell, Chevron and others for downplaying the impact of their products on Puerto Rico and the climate. The case highlights the role that the "production, promotion, refining, marketing, and sale of fossil fuel-based consumer products played in causing the losses, deaths and destruction of property resulting from the catastrophic storms of September 2017" that caused an estimate of 4,600 deaths in Puerto Rico and argues "for the losses and economic damages the Defendants’ acts continue to cause, accelerate, and contribute to the deleterious alteration of Puerto Rico’s climate, thereby damaging the Municipalities of Puerto Rico, and damaging the health, safety, and welfare of the people who reside in the Municipalities" The group of 16 municipalities filed what they called a first-of-its-kind lawsuit last week against about a dozen fossil fuel companies and others. The towns say the companies coordinated a multibillion-dollar "fraudulent marketing scheme" to convince consumers that fossil fuel products do not alter the climate. That campaign ran contrary to the companies' own studies showing their products accelerate climate change, resulting in more deadly storms, the lawsuit said. The municipalities said the companies outlined a plan of deception in a joint memo that took aim at international climate negotiations in the 1990s. The coordinated deception spanning decades violates U.S. racketeering and antitrust laws among others, the suit claims. This is such an interesting and powerful case, I really recommend you read the Nature of the case part: https://fingfx.thomsonreuters.com/gfx/legaldocs/jnvwyekmzvw/Puerto%20Rico%20Complaint%20Exxon.pdf Read more about this first-of-its-kind lawsuit: https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/puerto-rican-towns-sue-big-oil-under-rico-alleging-collusion-climate-denial-2022-11-29/

The companies must be held accountable for their contribution towards climate change and help pay for the costs.
