COP29 puts 'clean flexibility' on the agenda for the first time

This year’s COP29 presidency – for the first time – has set out energy storage, grids and hydrogen as key priorities.

It's a sign of the times, with action on clean flexibility made essential by the rapid rise of renewables worldwide.

A new pledge will target a sixfold increase in global energy storage capacity by 2030 and investment into more than 80 million kilometres of grids by 2040, while a new declaration aims to unlock a global market for clean hydrogen.

These form part of a '4S' suite of clean flexibility tools that make the most of renewable electricity at times of abundance by shifting demand to these periods, storing electricity for use at a later time, sharing it where it’s needed more, and optimising supply with fully flexible generation assets.

Ember's briefing on the clean flexibility goals at COP29 shows that it's clear that the COP29 goal for storage is necessary and achievable, while grids and hydrogen will need extra attention.
  • The surge in battery manufacturing capacity can supply the storage goal 8 times over
  • The new 2030 grid goal requires build-rate to rise by 50%
  • Hydrogen electrolysers have the potential to rise 100-fold by 2030, but only around 5 GW of electrolysers are operating today.

“COP29 could provide a unique platform opportunity to discuss how clean flexibility can step up to make the transition towards solar and wind quick, cheap and secure.”
