Africa Collects Textiles - Stops textile waste

The textile industry is one of the most polluting industries of the world. To keep production costs low the cotton is commonly grown in Africa, shipped to be processed in Asia and then sold on the European market. The overproduction of fast fashion clothing with poor quality leads to large amount of textile waste. When thrown away a lot of it ends up in countries of the Global South. In 2019 Kenya imported 185,000 tonnes of second-hand clothes, and 30-40% of the clothing had no market value & instead becomes textile waste. (https://textilevaluechain.in/in-depth-analysis/kenyas-import-of-seconhand-clothing-and-accessories-between-2016-2020-an-overview-of-mitumba-market-in-kenya/) Africa Collects Textiles works to create a circular economy for textiles by reusing & recycling i. Africa. Generating new jobs & designing usable clothing and items from textile that would otherwise become waste. This is great. Thank you so much for the kind words! We are collecting, sorting and recycling used textiles in Kenya and Nigeria. We dont do this to justify the dumping of waste in Africa. We do this to create an alternative 2nd hand clothing sector, to reduce dependancy on second hand clothes from The West and to keep materials away from rivers and landfills. We would like to recognise locally made garments, for us to recover the materials, to be send to Kenyan mills and spinners. Kenya and Nigeria are both interesting countries for a circular fashion sector because all steps, from cotton production to fashion brands, are available within the countries. Before we will be able to recover fibers, we will repurpose non-wearable items into new products. We need to invest in an infrastructure to process all the waste and we hope one day the big brands will support us. We are reducing the environmental damage caused by their business model and the costs for that should be covered by their margins. We are in favor of a waste tax on every garment and we need Extended Producer Responsibility funds to save our planet from fashion waste.

Great initiative but its sad many countries from western and china dump all their second hands in Africa, some unworthy. If there is a good rules from receiving countries in Africa can minimize this, etc.
