When we think of Climate Change, livestock, coal, and petrol often come to mind.
So, are they the cause of Climate Change?
“No resources can ever cause a problem, the only thing that can cause a problem is how you manage those resources.”- Allan Savory, the man who has dedicated his life to reversing desertification into grassland using a method called Holistic Management.
When we talk about tackling Climate Change, many might say we need to reduce livestock populations because they create too much carbon in their life cycle. It seems like we are wrong again.
This Holistic Management uses livestock and planned grazing to mimic nature, using the movement of the herds and their manure to prevent oxidation and protect the soil which creates the right conditions for plants and grasses. According to Savory Institute, Holistic Planned Grazing can increase soil carbon on average by 3 tons of carbon per hectare per year.
A third of the world’s surface is threatened by desertification. Imagine how much carbon we can take out of the atmosphere. As Allan mentioned in the TED, if we just use holistic management on half of the grassland in the world, the amount of carbon the grassland soil can take out enough carbon from the atmosphere to bring us to pre-industry levels.

The famous TED talk - recognized as one of the 50 most intriguing TED talks of all time.
Industrial agriculture today is arguably the most destructive industry ever in the history of humankind. It damages the soil’s health and increases land degradation and deforestation. If we don’t do this right, desertification will keep increasing as it is today: over 4 million square kilometers of land are being degraded every year due to overgrazing and improper farming practices, deforestation, urbanization and land development, mining, and climate change.
Desertification not only causes climate change, but worse than that, it is causing hunger, poverty, violence, social breakdown and war. “If it continues to increase, we are unlikely to stop climate change even after we have phased out fossil fuels.”
But we have the solution to change the situation and lower the risk at a very low cost: Holistic Management.
When regeneration is holistic, you are creating the conditions for the whole ecosystem’s health. Holistic Management brings abundance and resilience to where it is needed most: Soil gets fertilized and healthy, which can store more carbon on the ground. Land increases its capacity to absorb flash flooding. Both Biodiversity and animal welfare get increased…
After several decades of effort, approximately 50 Hubs are created, 29 million hectares are transformed, and 22,000 people are trained. Find out the great stories and transformation cases here:

Last year, a documentary movie was published to recognize Allan’s work in the region penĂnsula ibĂ©rica, a place that has 2000 years of history in agriculture:
