Wake up Swedish government! You are about to miss key EU climate targets by 2030 and the fault lies squarely with you.
So, which climate targets is Sweden expected to miss?
Forestry and land use: Sweden needs to increase carbon capture by 8 million tons by 2030, necessitating reduced logging. The government estimates a shortfall of 7 to 19 million tons per year compared to EU requirements.
Transport sector emissions: Previously, Sweden met EU targets but now anticipates exceeding them by 4 million tons due to decreased biofuel blending mandates.
Share of renewable energy: Despite being a leader in renewable energy, Sweden is not projected to meet the EU’s increased targets by 2030.
Energy efficiency: Sweden is significantly behind on energy efficiency goals, with the government arguing that more energy is needed for green initiatives.
Environmental researcher Mikael Karlsson condemned the government, calling this a "breach of law" and "disrespectful to democracy" and well we couldn't agree more. Sweden used to be a climate leader in Europe, but now Sweden’s failure to meet its commitments undermines EU-wide efforts and global climate agreements.
Energy Minister Ebba Busch acknowledged the issue, stating, "It's true, we have homework to do". 🤡 well that's the least you can do.

To ensure that significant carbon reductions are achieved, the government must give priority to plans that are executable and in line with its promises.
