Record year for olive ridley turtles in Bangladesh as conservation work pays off 🐢

Bangladesh celebrates a notable achievement in turtle conservation as it records the highest number of olive ridley turtle eggs during this nesting season. The success is attributed to extensive conservation efforts and awareness programs conducted among local communities. However, the growing tourism industry and infrastructure development still pose significant threats to the turtles and their nesting grounds.
According to a survey by the NGO Nature Conservation Management, 7,528 eggs were found on three different islands off Cox's Bazar, marking a 30% increase from the previous year. This positive trend is the result of comprehensive initiatives undertaken by the government, NGOs, and local communities, including volunteer work and raising awareness about the importance of protecting turtle habitats.

The olive ridley turtle is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and has been facing various challenges through the years. The destruction of nesting grounds due to development activities and increased tourist traffic, as well as the entanglement of turtles in fishing nets at sea, have had detrimental effects on their population. The government has taken measures to create a safe environment for turtles, such as establishing conservation centers and nesting grounds. However, the impact of tourism and infrastructure development on nesting turtle populations remains a concern.
So, there is still work to do to ensure the long-term survival of olive ridley turtles in Bangladesh, but this story is an example of how conservation efforts can reverse the trend for endangered species. Let's send climate love on World Turtle Day. 🐢💚

A survey by the NGO Nature Conservation Management (NACOM) found 7,528 eggs at 58 spots on three different islands — Pachar, Shilkali and Shahpari — off the coastal district of Cox’s […]
